If you’re wondering “do I really need to vaccinate my dog every year?” — you’re not alone. More dog owners in the UK are now exploring titer testing for dogs as a way to check immunity levels before giving routine boosters. I’m one of them — and in this post, I’m sharing why I use titer testing for dogs in the UK, what it involves, and what Robyn’s surprising result taught me.

What Is Titer Testing for Dogs?

A titer test (pronounced tie-ter) is a simple blood test that checks whether your dog still has antibodies to certain core diseases. In the UK, this typically includes:

  • Parvovirus

  • Distemper

  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis (adenovirus)

Instead of automatically giving your dog a booster each year, a titer test gives you actual data about their immune status.

Why I Choose Titer Testing for Dogs UK Over Routine Boosters

I’m not anti-vaccine — far from it. My dogs get all their core puppy vaccines and the first-year boosters. But after that, I choose to test before I top up.

Here’s why:

  • ✅ It avoids unnecessary vaccinations

  • ✅ It gives me peace of mind

  • ✅ It allows for personalised, informed care — especially for working dogs

What Robyn’s Test Result Taught Me

A few years ago, I re-tested my Labrador Robyn. I expected her parvo antibody level to have dropped slightly — that’s common over time.

But to my surprise, the level had gone up.

My vet explained that Robyn had likely been exposed to parvovirus in the environment. She didn’t get sick, but her immune system recognised it, kicked into gear, and naturally boosted her protection. All without a needle.

That small test result gave me huge insight — and it’s something I’d never have known if I hadn’t done a titer test.

What I Still Vaccinate For

I still vaccinate my dogs for:

  • Leptospirosis

  • Kennel Cough

These don’t create lasting immunity and aren’t reliably tested with titers, so regular boosters are still part of our routine.

How Often Should You Titer Test?

In most cases, titer testing every three years is sufficient. Some working dog owners test more often, especially if their dogs are exposed to lots of environments or show signs of sensitivity.

👉 Nobivac’s vaccine schedule also outlines how immunity builds and how titers support decision-making.

I personally test every three years, but always take my vet’s advice into account too.

Final Thoughts on Titer Testing for Dogs UK

Titer testing for dogs UK isn’t about skipping vaccines. It’s about using data and timing to vaccinate responsibly, with your dog’s unique needs in mind.

For me, it’s helped avoid unnecessary treatments, reduce risk, and better support my dogs — especially the ones working hard in the field.
